14 Years in Iceland Photography | Gallery
“It is here that I can breathe in all that surrounds me, I feel ancient and connected”
The force of nature is present, the pounding water creates a rhythm on which I stand, photographs tell the story
There are some places on the planet that seem to defy all that we know about nature. Iceland is one of these places. It is a country where artists and explorers navigate to in order to feel connected to the earth. As an artist of nature, Iceland is a space that I spend a great deal of time in, a landscape that connects my inner artist to my vision.
I have crossed the lands of Iceland, by car and by foot. I have explored all corners and all seasons of this beautiful country in search of rugged, raw and intense natural beauty. It still exists here - it lives, breathes and transforms all who come to witness it. Yet, as will all things, man will change nature’s course. It is an inevitable fact that our footprint, our invasion, will cause changes that cannot be undone. When I first started exploring and photographing Iceland, there were few hotels outside of Reykjavik. I stayed in family hosted farm houses, with a small room, single bed, and homemade soup to get through the day. I felt special, connected, not just to the land, but to the people and friends I had come to know so well.
In time, tourism caught up to the island, and forever changed its course. Hotels, shoppes and restaurants are abundant in the South and SouthEast. I don’t mind the restaurants actually, as food was so hard to come by years ago, but changed has occurred. I am so fortunate to know Iceland before the crowds, but away from the crowds, Iceland is still spectacular.
Search out the lesser known spots, as the main locations have become busy with tour buses to photograph. Get your map out, get a 4×4 SUV, and go explore. Photograph the glaciers while they are still reachable by car and foot. Despite the traffic and busy locations, I return to Iceland every year as it is simply an incredible landscape to experience!
