Creative Challenge “People”
Photographing People is a topic that photographers either love to photograph, or are uncomfortable photographing. This is why we want to challenge you.
Photographing people is more involved than nature or street photography, but this is simply because it’s a different subject. With people, we can choose a style, or genre to fit our comfort level. For example, we can photograph family and friends in candid moments, or we can capture portraits where we intentionally pose the person and use natural or artificial light.
There are interesting people everywhere that create their own story. I recommend that you think about your objective, and stay focused on one approach whether it be lifestyle, portrait or storytelling.
Should you choose to photograph strangers, respect their privacy, and consider creating an image where the person is not recognizable, but suggest a story. You can always ask permission as you are exploring and learning how to work with people.
What ever approach you choose, look for things like shape, balance in the composition, light and shadow on a face as these elements of design, especially when it comes to people, is important. As with anything we do in life, the more parts we learn, the better we are with the whole.
